International Space Olympics - Detailed activities

Preparation

Arrival is possible 1-2 days before the start of the event. You will be set up in the hotel, and for what is left till the day of the opening ceremony, the delegation is permitted to do whatever possible (ie sightseeing).

Every delegation participating has to present something to the others, propably something from their country. You have all the time till the Opening Ceremony to do this. The Opening Ceremony usually takes 1.30-2.00 hours, as all delegations have to present a little something.

A disco event follows the OC, lasting for another 1.30 hour, on the upper floor of the city hall, where you can first meet the rest of the contestants. While the music is mostly Russian, foreign countries tend to dance one or two dances from their country.

Returning to the hotel, there is free time, where you can do anything.

Sightseeing

This is the day of the city tour. Although it’s going to be pretty long (5-6 hrs), it’s the most relaxing day. You will visit the Kremlin, and almost everything that’s in there.

Returning to the hotel in the afternoon, you have free time.

Presentations: 2-day event

First day, first round; if your delegation has more than one participants who present a project, most of the times the presentation schedule is planned so that you can watch all of them.

In the afternoon, you have to present your second sketch; that for the friendship party. You will be given a topic (ie Minute of Glory) and your sketch has to be relative to that theme. Friendship party is usually on the same day as the second round of the presentations.

Second day, second round; and only the 3 first from each group pass to the final. The 2nd round takes place in the amphitheater, in the science school. For those who pass to the second round, be prepared: you are going to present in front of about 300 students and 10-15 judges.

In afternoon, it’s the friendship party, and then free time.

Mathematics/Physics/Informatics/Literature contests

Exams take place in the amphitheater, in the school. Depending which exam is first, you will spend around 30′ for general information about the procedure (only once), and then around 10′ in every subject for subject-specific guidelines.

For all exams you have 4 hours. It is possible to leave immediately. The buses are leaving in 3 groups, with the last being after the 4 hours have passed.

All exams except informatics take place in the amphitheater. For informatics, you have to ask someone where the computer lab is. IIRC, it’s in the first floor, on the right side of the building.

While mathematics and physics are on different days, literature and informatics are on the same day, so you have to choose in which you will participate.

Additional activities

On the 3 days of the exams, there are some educational/cultural activities for the afternoon. For sure, you are going to visit the Space Museum at Energia. In the plan is also that you visit MCC (mission control center), but there is a small problem with the last one. To visit it, you have to leave around 11 o’clock from the physics exam. I suggest you do it; it’s worth not taking an exam (unless you are sure that’s you are going to do extremely well).

While this “plan” is not as complete as I would like to be (due to bad memory), it’s still useful I believe. :-)
